How does the TENS work?
At the onset of labour, simply apply the four adhesive-pads to your back as shown in the accompanying instructions and switch the TENS unit on. Adjust the intensity to a comfortable level so that you can feel a pleasant pulsing sensation. When experiencing a contraction, press the booster button for the extra surge of power needed to relieve the pain. When the contraction ends, press the booster button again.  TENS can be used for as long as desired during labour.
What does it feel like?
The TENS emits a pleasant tingling sensation on the skin where the pads are placed.
Is TENS effective?
The level of pain relief obtained varies from person to person.  Some people find that TENS provides all the pain relief required during their whole labour, whereas others find additional pain relief methods necessary during the later stages.  Because TENS allows you freedom of movement, you are able to use other comfort measures at the same time.  If you think you may want an epidural when labor is intense, TENS can be helpful to manage early labor until the point when it is appropriate to have an epidural placed.
Can a TENS machine be used in the hospital?
Yes, it can be worn any time you are not in water, unless you have epidural or spinal anesthesia in place.
Can I use a TENS machine if I am planning a water birth?
Yes, but not in the water itself.  Midwives often suggest waiting until an active labour pattern is established (often around 4-5cm dilated) before getting into the birth pool. The TENS can help you to cope with early labour and during any periods when you are not in the pool.
Are TENS machines safe?
Yes.  Elle TENS units are specifically designed for labour. There are no known side effects for the birthing parent or baby.

Contraindications: D
o not use before the 37th week of pregnancy unless under medical supervision.  If you suffer from heart disease, epilepsy, or have any doubts whatsoever, consult a medical professional. If you use a pacemaker you should not use a TENS machine.

*Use of TENS unit is included with my doula services while I am attending your birth, at no extra fee.
